Coffee News Recap, 24 June: PRF Colombia to take place next week, several 2022 World Coffee Championships held at WOC Milan & other stories
Every Friday, Perfect Daily Grind rounds up the top coffee industry news from the previous week. Here are this week’s stories.

- PRF Colombia to take place from 30 June to 1 July. The event will include the Origin Trip Experience (held from 26 to 29 June), the Café Pergamino Barista Jam competition, and the Cold Brew Championship in partnership with Toddy. PRF Colombia will take place at Plaza Mayor in Medellín and is expected to attract around 5,000 visitors.
- Coffee Roasters Guild announces Diedrich Roasters Scholarship programme for 2022 CRG Retreat. Five successful applicants will receive scholarships to attend the retreat, which will be held from 25 to 28 August in Delavan, Wisconsin. Applications are open until 1 July.
- Chemicals company BASF manufactures coffee berry disease (CBD) fungicide for Kenyan farmers. The Priaxor 225 EC fungicide inhibits growth of CBD for up to 28 days. Thousands of Kenyan coffee farmers will have access to the fungicide. If left untreated, CBD can reduce yields by up to 80%.
- Ecotact announced as Presidential Sponsor of Cup of Excellence. The hermetic packaging solutions company will provide the official packaging for the competitions.
- UK roaster Pact Coffee to raise money for LGBTQ+ charity Stonewall. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the UK’s first official Pride march, Pact will launch a limited-edition coffee on 30 June. From each sale of the Colombian coffee, £1 (US $1.23) will be donated to Stonewall.
- Specialty Coffee Association conducts survey on business prospects in global coffee industry. The Specialty Coffee Business Sentiment Survey aims to collect research on how roasters, traders, producers, coffee shop owners, and equipment manufacturers perceive their individual business prospects and the challenges they may be facing. The survey will close on 25 July.

- Sucafina launches premium instant coffee product. The PREMIO South American soluble coffee contains 100% arabica beans and is exclusively available through Complete Coffee Ltd.
- New study finds caffeine consumption can influence shopping behaviour. Researchers from the University of South Florida found that when customers consumed complimentary caffeinated coffee prior to shopping, they spent around 50% more money than those who drank decaf coffee or water. Customers who drank caffeinated coffee also purchased some 30% more items than those who didn’t.
- CEO of De’Longhi, Massimo Garavaglia, resigns. Garavaglia has decided to resign for personal reasons, and will officially leave the company on 31 August 2022.
- Costa Coffee to roll-out more than 1,100 new Express self-serve machines in the UK. An initial trial of 40 Express machines was launched in Bristol in 2021. The new machines prepare both hot and cold beverages, which the coffee chain claims is a world first.
- Paulig and K Group plant more than 84,000 coffee trees in Nicaragua. The two companies also planted 2,000 shade trees in the village of José de la Luz. The new coffee trees will support 15 local coffee farms.
- India’s largest coffee chain shows signs of recovery after mass store closures. Café Coffee Day reported a net profit of US $8.5 million for the fourth quarter ending 31 March 2022, compared to a loss of US $12.3 million in the final quarter of 2021. The chain closed 67% of its stores over the past three years as a result of financial misreporting and Covid-19.

- Specialty Coffee & Tea Asia 2022 expo held in Singapore. The two-day event is part of the annual Specialty & Fine Food Asia event. Alongside a trade show and live demonstrations, the event hosted the 2022 Singapore National Coffee Championships.
- Welsh Starbucks franchise receives £10 million (US $12.3 million) investment for store expansion. The Magic Bean Co. received the investment from HSBC UK. The company plans to open 200 franchised Starbucks coffee shops in Wales over the next five years.
- AeroPress announces Macap as official sponsor of 2022 World AeroPress Championship. The new Labo grinder will be used at the competition from 1 to 3 December in Vancouver BC, Canada.
- Value of US office coffee market to increase by 24% by 2026. The market is expected to be valued at US $4.4 billion by 2026, according to Packaged Facts.
- Survey finds less than one-in-five Canadians drink black coffee. The survey, which included around 1,000 people, also found that 43% of Canadians add large amounts of milk or creamer to their coffee – representing around half of the women surveyed.
- App-based coffee maker Spinn launches 60-second cold brew feature. Spinn’s machine uses centrifugal brewing technology to prepare cold brew in under a minute. As well as cold brew, Spinn can prepare more than 20 different beverages.

- World of Coffee Milan hosts several 2022 World Coffee Championships. The Specialty Coffee Association’s flagship European event will take place until 25 June. WOC Milan is hosting Latte Art Championship, Coffee in Good Spirits, Cup Tasters, Coffee Roasting Championship, and Cezve/Ibrik Championship. Returning features of the event include the Best New Product and the Coffee Design Awards:
- The 2022 Best New Product Awards winners include Kaffeeform’s Weducer Cup Refined for Coffee Accessories, Hard Beans’ Hardtank Dispenser for Commercial Cold Brew Preparation and Serving Equipment, and CoffeeZ Inc.’s Duomo The Tamper for Consumer Coffee or Tea Preparation and Serving Equipment (Non-Electrical).
- The 2022 Coffee Design Awards winner is HasBean Coffee for its packaging designed by Ed Hughes and Fran Newman-Day.
- Giesen Coffee Roasters launches new model in the W6 series. The automated W6 Pro debuted at WOC Milan. The new model includes a green bean conveyor belt and an advanced cooling system.
- Sensible Coffee to host new series of Flavours coffee auctions. The first auction will be Flavours of Honduras, which will be held on 13 July at 11:00 BST. Coffees from more than 250 farmers will be available at the auction, ranging from 84 to 88 points.
- Coffee chain EL&N to launch in Italian market. The first location will open in the Piazza Del Liberty in Milan in June 2022. Italy is the third European market for EL&N, which also operates locations in France and the UK, as well as the Middle East.
- Three-minute cold brew maker FREDDA launches in Europe. The AI-powered machine uses vacuum brewing technology, and debuted at WOC Milan.

- New pour over brewer brand Graycano launches in Germany. The cast aluminium brewer includes a ceramic coating and cork sleeve. In collaboration with 2022 German Brewers Cup champion Nicole Battefeld-Montgomery, Graycano is selling limited-edition yellow and blue cork sleeves to raise money for people affecting by the invasion of Ukraine.
- International Women’s Coffee Alliance to host Coffee Women’s Colloquium on 29 June. The third virtual session of the current series will cover Career Journeys and will be hosted by the US Women in Coffee Association.
- Starbucks North America appoints Sara Trilling as new President. Trilling first started at the company in 2002 and has previously served as Head of Coffee for Starbucks Asia Pacific.
- Louis Dreyfus Company publishes 2021 Sustainability Report. The food ingredients and coffee trader established a Carbon Solutions platform to measure and minimise carbon emissions across its supply chains. The company also committed to eliminating all deforestation in its supply chains by 2025.
- Dutch chain Broodzaak launches first coffee to-go subscription in the Netherlands. The monthly subscription service will be available at 18 train station locations in the country. Customers who sign up will be able to receive up to five hot beverages per day.

- Fri, 10 Jun – Maru Mallee wins 2022 Dutch AeroPress Championship. Mallee will represent the Netherlands at the 2022 World AeroPress Championship.
- Fri, 10 Jun – Submissions open for 2023 Good Food Awards. The award scheme celebrates sustainably and locally-produced food and beverage products in the US – including coffee. Submissions are open until 30 June.
- Mon, 13 Jun – Starbucks China plans to open 6,000 locations by end of 2022. Starbucks is also investing in a Coffee Innovation Park in Kunshan, east China, which the company says will assist in distribution of products across the country.
- Tue, 14 Jun – Global instant coffee market to be valued at US $17.3 billion by 2027. The fastest growing markets during the analysis period are expected to be the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Southeast Asia.
- Thu, 16 Jun – Pret A Manger to open 20 new stores in United Arab Emirates. The coffee and food-to-go chain currently operates three stores in the country, including two locations at Dubai International airport. The new stores will open in partnership with franchisee Emirates Leisure Retail over the coming years.
- Thu, 16 Jun – Coffee blockchain platform Beyco launches new loan system for coffee farmers. The Financier Profile system provides quick access to credit for smallholder farmers.
- Fri, 17 Jun – Global coffee pods market to grow by US $8.53 billion by 2025. Market research firm Technavio estimates that Europe will have around 45% of the global market share during the analysis period.
